Ecofys investigates biofuels for shipping
The potential to employ biofuels to power ships rather than fossil fuels has been assessed by Dutch consultancy Ecofys. The research was undertaken on behalf of the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA), with Ecofys' final report concluding that a shift to biofuels could “enable marine transport to become carbon neutral”. It would also offer the potential to reduce “significantly” the marine shipping sectors' pollutant emissions to air and water and make marine accidents less environmentally damaging. Ecofys' study considers both market opportunities and barriers of shifting to biofuels as well as environmental consequences. -
