JOB TITLE: Principal/Technical Director Geotechnical (Mining) Engineering

DISCIPLINE TEAM: Geology and Geotechnics

OFFICE LOCATION(S): Flexible but Edinburgh, Bristol or Nottingham preferred.

REPORTING TO: Technical Discipline Manager

WORKING HOURS: 37.5 per week Monday – Friday

SALARY: Negotiable, plus excellent benefits, potential for equity

SYNOPSIS:

SLR is an international environmental consultancy with almost 900 employees working from over 60 offices in the Europe, North America, Australasia, and Africa. Headquartered in the UK, SLR is one of a very small number of truly international specialist environmental consultancies.

SLR provides global advice and support on a wide range of strategic and site-specific issues to a diverse and growing base of business, regulatory and governmental clients. Key areas of our business are the energy and mining sectors where we are involved with both the oil and gas and renewable power industries (including wind, energy from waste, hydropower and biomass). We also advise both mining companies and funding organisations throughout the world.

We have an ambitious plan for the continued global development of our mining related business and we believe that the UK-based Geotechnical Team has a key part to play in this. Consequently we are seeking an ambitious Geotechnical Engineer with considerable commercial acumen to help us with this further expansion.

As background, our existing UK-based has a wealth of design and site investigation experience; and SLR has an impressive portfolio of geotechnical clients/projects within the Mining industry, particularly in Africa and Australia, where we provide a range of tailings/earthworks design and supervision/QA services for a diverse range of minerals and extractive industry clients.

Working alongside our existing team, the successful candidate will help to drive the development and growth of both SLR’s broader Mining Geotechnical Services as well as the team within the UK. They will also need to deliver of a range of projects throughout the UK as well as internationally.

This position presents an outstanding opportunity to join an expanding team of Geotechnical Engineers within a truly multinational consultancy and offers significant potential for career development and enhancement based on performance. Given the global nature of the mining business, there is the potential for overseas travel on an opportunity by opportunity/project by project basis.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Commercial/business development activities and revenue generation within new and existing mining clients both within the UK and Internationally

Delivery of a range of geotechnical consulting services including tailings dam design, major earthworks design. Management of site supervision services

Growth and development of the Geotechnical team servicing the Mining sector, as well as project management of existing staff working within this area

PERSON SPECIFICATION:

TECHNICAL SKILLS / ABILITIES / EXPERIENCE :

Essential

Strategic thinking

Proven work winning capabilities within a consultancy context

Good network of potential clients

Experience in Geotechnical Design relating to the Mining sector – Tailings Dams, Major Earthworks

Ability to work independently in remote locations and provide effective, technically sound solutions and advice to clients

Sound knowledge of FE analysis, foundation design and settlement analysis

Prepared to accept short term overseas assignments

Desirable

International consultancy experience

EDUCATION / QUALIFICATION / MEMBERSHIP :

Essential

Civils or Geotechnical based first degree

Desirable

Masters degree in Geotechnical Engineering

Chartered status (CGeol or CEng) (or approaching chartered status)

PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES :

Essential

An ability to adjust to normal social circumstances including contact with colleagues, clients and contractors. Ability to work in a team and self. Reliable, conscientious, committed and a visionary.

IT literacy and proficiency in MS office applications
